From Advancedetiquette.com For women, an invitation to a black tie event means wearing a long, floor length evening dresses or evening separates. A short cocktail dress may be appropriate for some cocktail receptions, summer events, or daytime functions. There you have it. Since the ball is neither a cocktail reception, a summer event nor a daytime function, a long gown is the appropriate choice. LINK

Bump. Hopefully this will be helpful to the first-timers who seem to be confused about appropriate ball attire.

Princess B --- 5 years ago -

You can wear a short dress and be classy too!!

♥my£ife --- 5 years ago -

You can wear a short dress and be classy too!! Yes, but it's not appropriate for a black-tie event like the USMC Ball.

Flameless in a Handbasket --- 5 years ago -

You can wear a short dress and be classy too!!  as long as it is for some cocktail receptions, summer events, or daytime functions.

saran wrap

♥my£ife --- 5 years ago -

*sigh* even when it's written out plain as day, people still don't get it. I give up!

Sunshine ♥ --- 5 years ago -

saran wrap thats what Im wearing. I saved some of the red from Christmas so I can at least match my husband and boyfriend.

Princess B --- 5 years ago -

Yes, but it's not appropriate for a black-tie event like the USMC Ball. I'm not comfortable wearing a long "ball" gown. I didn't even wear that crap to my prom so I definatly don't plan on wearing to the ball. Granted I don't plan on showing up in a dress up to my butt with my boobs to my chin or anything.

♥my£ife --- 5 years ago -

I'm not comfortable wearing a long "ball" gown. I didn't even wear that crap to my prom so I definatly don't plan on wearing to the ball. It doesn't matter if you're comfortable or not. It's not proper attire, and the ball is not about YOU. I hate long gowns too, but I'm not going to wear something inappropriate just because I'm not comfortable in the proper dress code.

Princess B --- 5 years ago -

*sigh* even when it's written out plain as day, people still don't get it. I give up! It's not a matter of "getting it" or not getting it. People are going to wear what they want to wear, as long as they look classy and represent their marine well WHO CARES? If you wouldn't wear it then don't wear it. Move on.

Sunshine ♥ --- 5 years ago -

It doesn't matter if you're comfortable or not. It's not proper attire, and the ball is not about YOU. I hate long gowns too, but I'm not going to wear something inappropriate just because I'm not comfortable in it. completly agree. whats the big deal with wearing a long dress anyhow?

Princess B --- 5 years ago -

It's not proper attire, and the ball is not about YOU. I'm pretty sure if it's on MY body it's about ME.

Sunshine ♥ --- 5 years ago -

I'm pretty sure if it's on MY body it's about ME the BALL is not about YOU.

~k@rlita$ w@y~ --- 5 years ago -

You can wear a short dress and be classy too!! ive been trying to post my pic from last year but i cant.....

♥my£ife --- 5 years ago -

the BALL is not about YOU. Apparently some people think it is.

Princess B --- 5 years ago -

the BALL is not about YOU. MY dress is! I'm not going to wear a dress that is not me and that doesn't fit my personality.

Sunshine ♥ --- 5 years ago -

blah blah blah. the ball is a formal event. long dresses are formal. that was the point of the thread.

Princess B --- 5 years ago -

What I wanna know is why in the hell do you care about what other people are wearing? If you can pull off a shorter style than why not do it? Your only freaking young once. I would rather be comfortable and have what i'm wearing reflect ME than sit there feeling like a dork in a prom gown. Appropiate or not; thanks but NO thanks.

Flameless in a Handbasket --- 5 years ago -

whats the big deal with wearing a long dress anyhow?  There isn't one. I am not comfortable in anything formal. Honestly, I'd rather just wear Jeans and a T-Shirt. According to some logic, this may be appropriate too, since it's what I'm most comfortable in? Don't worry I'll still get my hair put up and look presentable.

♥my£ife --- 5 years ago -

Is this your first ball, Princess B? Just curious.

Princess B --- 5 years ago -

Is this your first ball, Princess B? Just curious. Sure is not. My husband has been in 6 years almost 7 ;)

The Marine Corps Ball is not about "BEING YOUNG." It is about looking classy and presentable. What do you girls not understand about the fact that this is one of the most formal events associate with the Marine Corps? It is not about being trendy and oh so cute. Tell your husband to take you to the club afterwards so you can wear that short, but oh so adorable dress that you can't live without.

PPCTMistyLa Diabla --- 5 years ago -

This argument is so old. It gets argued every year. Bottom line is, the code says formal. The Blues are super uncomfortable too. They dont say "eff this...the blues are uncomfortable. Ima wear my cammies!" A cocktail dress to the ball is like cammies at the Ball. Do you wanna be the doode in cammies? Save yourself! LOL

Flameless in a Handbasket --- 5 years ago -

A cocktail dress to the ball is like cammies at the Ball. Do you wanna be the doode in cammies? LOL, this is a good analogy.

♥my£ife --- 5 years ago -

Sure is not. My husband has been in 6 years almost 7 ;) Okay, thanks. I was just curious. I'm kind of surprised frankly. Ultimately, you're right. Everyone can wear whatever they want. I just prefer to stay within the appropriate dress code out of respect to the USMC and to my husband. For the record, I would rather see a classy shorter gown than a long one slit up to the crotch, and cut outs on the midriff. Unfortunately we usually see lots of both!

MandaBabyy --- 5 years ago -

For the record, I would rather see a classy shorter gown than a long one slit up to the crotch, and cut outs on the midriff. Unfortunately we usually see lots of both! Wearing a long dress like that totally defeats the purpose of wearing.. well, a long dress!

This argument is so old. It gets argued every year. its my first year argueing about it!!! so excited lol

Grosie --- 5 years ago -

I wore a short dress twice, they were both a little below the knees. Wasn't a big deal.

♥my£ife --- 5 years ago -

its my first year argueing about it!!! so excited lol lol! CT: perfect analogy with the cammies.
