The Marine Corp just changed the higher tenure for Sgt from 12 yrs to 10 yrs! My husband has been a Sgt for for 5 1/2 yrs not because he's a shitbag but because his MOS has been closed for SNCO promotions for 5 yrs!! He went to reenlist last week and was rejected because he will go way over his 10 yr mark. They are closing his MOS which is why no promotions. Anyhow this is the first yr he is in zone for SSgt!! He is #2 on the list and they are only promoting 2, however there are 3 of them in zone!! The man who is in slot 3 behind my husband was bust down from SSgt back to Sgt and kicked off the drill field and NJP! My husband now has a successful B-billet and this guy does not. Also this guy will reach his 12 yr service limitation Nov of this yr. The number 1 guy in zone is a shoe in. My question here is does anyone know my husbands chances are against guy number 3? I'm so worried because if he dies not pick up it will end his entire military career!!

ItchyWitch --- 13 years ago -

Is his training complete? Did he do his 8000 series and Sgt's course.

Does he have any paper work on him? Over weight or anything negative?

ItchyWitch --- 13 years ago -

Also my Hubs is saying that he should LAT move into a hot fill MOS.

shesfromthevalley --- 13 years ago -

How many years has he been in as of right now?

meli --- 13 years ago -

No she said he has one. Lat moving was my first thought too warden.

meli --- 13 years ago -

yea I just re-read that

CaNi --- 13 years ago -

This is not true...please look for the last topic and read the MARADMIN. I am almost certain if he has never ever been passed he can request a CG Waiver to be seen on the next board. I don't know where the last post is but it is def under my name as commented on. If you want more info please send me a msg I will give you and hubby all the info you need.

jtswify --- 13 years ago -

No he has never been over weight has all his req. He's a SOI Platoon Commander and will have a successful B-billet Sept 1. No neg paperwork no NJP highest scores possible on fit reps and Sgt course has been completed. He has 8 yrs in right now. As of July 1, 2011 the Marine Corps will no longer allow you to reenlist and lat move at the same time. He is def going to lat move that has always been the plan however he was trying to get the B-billet out of the way. He also has an Associate Degree I don't know if that helps or not lol

AussieHusband --- 13 years ago -

Tell your husband to go MARSOC. If he makes it he will have job security.

CaNi --- 13 years ago -

Here I found it, QUOTED for you.

"IF A SERGEANT WITHOUT A PUNITIVE REDUCTION IN GRADE ATTAINS 10 YEARS OF SERVICE WITHOUT COMING INTO THE IN-ZONE POPULATION FOR HIS MOS, HE WILL BE EXTENDED UNTIL HE HAS HAD THE OPPORTUNITY FOR A SSGT PROMOTION BOARD TO CONSIDER HIM FOR PROMOTION IN A 'IN-ZONE' STATUS"

CaNi --- 13 years ago -

He can request for an extension as long as he has never been in zone is he an 03XX or 06XX just wondering those are common for slow promotions

CaNi --- 13 years ago -

He has 8 yrs in right now. As of July 1, 2011 the Marine Corps will no longer allow you to reenlist and lat move at the same time.

You never could lat move and reenlist at the same time unless you were on your first contract. He can submit a reenlistment for 2 years depedning on when his EAS is if he cant do at least 24 months he can submit for an extension.

jtswify --- 13 years ago -

Well an extention is his next option if he does not pick up. He was told by his career planner he could only do a 1 yr extension nothing over because the Marine Corps is making drastic cuts they were not making any exception. He is in zone this yr and will find out his MSgt and CO says he has a 95% chance to get it because he has such a good service record but ofcourse no one really knows until the board announces it. I would just think that they would choose a Marine with a flawless record and has shown leadership both in his MOS as well as his B-billet (he's ran a platoon for the last 1 1/2 yrs) over a Marine that was given the opportunity in a SNCO grade and failed! This guy was my husbands Sgt when he checked into the Fleet in 04 and got SSgt in 06 only to be bust down the following yr.

CaNi --- 13 years ago -

Here is the deal on this.

He will have to wait for the board.
If he is selected he is clear to reenlist.
If he is not selected. He will need to request and extension to take him past the next board or 10 years.
In Sept of next year if he is passed again, he will need to request Seps Pay and prepare for transition out. Hope I helped :)

I'm pretty sure she can still see your posts. You just can't PM her. It was probably an accident. I do it all the time on my phone. :/

Okay, we were PMing and I went to Reply and no go.

jtswify --- 13 years ago -

If he makes SSgt MarSoc is not excepting SSgt right now he already checked into it as one of his Lat Move options. I'm not to sure what his MOS code is but he works on the 46 engines the ones they are getting rid of for the offsprays.

Bedo's Girl :) --- 13 years ago -

If I am not mistaken .. Isn't he is going up against more than just 2 other Marines for SSgt in his MOS? There has to be more than just 3 Marines in his MOS for SSgt. Don't you go up against everyone in the Above zone, Promotion zone and Below zone? I could be wrong?

jtswify --- 13 years ago -

There's no above zone the MOS has been closed for 5 yrs mostly everyone that was in the above zone has either Lat Move or have gotten out. Lol that's funny you ask that because that was my question when he told me this as well.

jtswify --- 13 years ago -

The below zone yes but that is not his concern mainly because in the below zone no one is as qualified as the zone. So he seems not to be worried about that idk...

AussieHusband --- 13 years ago -

Marsoc isnt taking SSGT's? I thought they weren't taking Gysgt's and SSgt's were a go...? Should it matter if your husband is still a Sgt? Well if he's checked into it I'm sure he knows what he's talking about.

jtswify --- 13 years ago -

Lol he can't reenlist until he picks up and he can not Lat move until he reenlist so it's a double whammy lol. Let me rephrase that they are not taking Sr. Sgt. Which is like a lot of MOS' he is now limited and will be even more so if he picks up. He also has his warrant officer package in. He was in the Navy for 2 yrs out of HS took several yrs off and joined the Marines.
