At my doctor's apt on Monday I was dicussing that I thought the doc's office due date was off (I changed providers, and it seems they are now going by my 20 week ultrasound instead of the one I had done at 8 weeks with a different provider for due date) anywho, that's not the important part. She then mentioned that the ultrasound tech didn't get a good look at the babies heart, or any images of it for that reason. At my appt I didn't think to question it at all, but now I'm thinking "how interesting they didn't get good images of a vital organ, and didn't decide to redo it."
(obviously the baby has a heart beat, but I know there is more to it than just that in making sure it's properly functioning)
What they were telling you is that they were unable to visualize everything they needed to in the heart. It is fairly common and in 2 of my 5 pregnancies I had to come back later so that they could get the heart views they needed. I'm surprised that they are not redoing it for that, but perhaps you just don't have any risk factors for problems and didn't feel a 2nd u/s was medically necessary?
As for the due date early u/s are usually more reliable.
Well, I do go back at 30 weeks for an ultrasound (so I imagine they will recheck then(so really I guess I'm getting another recheck despite it being a "planned" ultrasound prior)
Yes, I mean the new date is actually unrealistic, as I would have been 1 week pregnant with a positive home pregnancy test, the originally date I was given matches up perfectly with everything, but I don't mind because I have 20 people rooting for the baby to be born on my husband's birthday (also his aunts), and because of past baby's size and having shoulder dystocia, they said they wouldn't let me reach 40 weeks, so this gives those 20 people a bit of hope, haha.
They cant actually give you a exact due date. Its just a guess. They take what information they have and try and guess a accurate date. I hate when they change it. To me go off my last LMP and leave it at that.
I hardly went with what my dr told me was my EDD. But it never changed through my whole pregnancy. I was about 5 week along when I found out. Don't take too much stock in dates. If you go a little over... so be it. And a little early... same. They tell you +/- 2 weeks for a reason.
My question is more about not scheduling for a repeated ultrasound because they couldn't see the heart than my EDD. (the due date is just how the topic came up about them not being able to see the heart otherwise I imagine no one would have mentioned it to me.) My due date is pretty irrelevant in a sense because they already said they wouldn't let me go to 40 weeks regardless because of my last daughters size, and her having shoulder dystocia.
LMP and first US are most reliable. The 20 week growth scan is generally not used to predict due dates. Just be aware of the due date you were initially told and if you are getting too close to 40 weeks, put the pressure on the doctors. I am having a similar issue, by 5 days...not an issue unless they try to allow me to go 2 weeks over...then I would be almost three weeks over. Congratulations and enjoy the experience!
If you're not having any issues, that's probably why they're not scheduling a separate US.
Why are you having another US at 30 weeks?
I think I live in "duh-ville, USA" I mentioned the above to my husband and he says, "well, you have a 30 week ultrasound. They probably plan on checking then."
and it makes sense because it's not like even if they repeated it earlier that they would be going in and doing surgery on my fetus if something did happen to be off. -----
As for the purpose of the 30 week ultrasound. It's routine at this office. First apt when they told me about their practice the told me about the 30 week ultrasound. Nothing really seemed to have much medical reasoning behind it, "just to check on the baby and see how they are growing, and we switch it over to 3d so the Mom, can have a peek at her baby." I've googled and can't find any information to do an ultrasound at that point, so I guess it's just that.
Or they are induction happy or CS, and will tell me, "oh no the baby is getting big already. We;re probably going to need to take the baby earlier. Who knows.
which them switching my due date the baby is going to look bigger 28 weeks compared to 30 week. It's a conspiracy! Kidding
Yes, 1 week 5 days later than original due date based off my 20 week anatomy scan. They are disregarding my ultrasound done at a previous practice at 8 weeks and my lmp.
(and two prior pregnancies I have not had a ultrasound after the anatomy scan, but this is routine for this office.)
